Some of you may realise that I do a specialist music radio show. I tried to do something different this week. A friend of mine, DJ Rubbish/Leftwing Idiot is involved with a project called Touretteshero, which is based around the experiences and aspirations of the real life superhero Touretteshero. Touretteshero is taking “ownership of the laughter associated with Tourette's in order to provide a genuinely funny cultural alternative to the majority of crude and ill-informed material about Tourette's that is currently on offer.”
It's a sparkling endeavour and might interest some of you. It interested me at least so I set about meeting Touretteshero and recording a Desert Island Tics session with her, with the help of Leftwing Idiot. She's very funny. We talked about music that provokes tics and some that is more calming and goes some way to arresting the physical sensations she experiences while ticking.
The show goes out tonight, Friday, at 10pm. It contains a lot of swearing.
Perhaps some of you have friends who have Tourette's, or perhaps you and people you know find most of the humour associated with the condition uncomfortable. If so, please listen to the show and let people know.
Touretteshero would like to hear from you and would like creative people to respond to the project through the cunning use of art and music and funding.
