Source FM is very sad to announce the death of Gwen Willoughby, after a long illness that she withstood with characteristic good humour and fortitude. As those of you who listened to her programmes will know, Gwen presented a morning show on the station for many years, fulfilling her long-held ambition to be ‘on air’. She will be remembered for the warmth of her manner, combined with a sharp mind and a persistence that a number of her political guests underestimated at their cost.
Gwen will be in the memory of her fellow presenters as a cheerful and considerate colleague, always concerned as to the welfare of those around her. She was also the first of the Willoughby dynasty to present a show at the station: her contagious enthusiasm for radio led her to bring her son David and husband Steve into the fold. Indeed, Steve presented Gwen’s show when she was too ill to continue in the hope that she might one day be back. He and David also co-presented the show in the week after she died, playing many tracks in her memory but maintaining the signature features of a ‘Gwen Willoughby show’.
To those of us at the station who knew and loved Gwen, we feel like we have lost ‘one of ours’ and she will be much missed, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out her family and friends. There is a service for Gwen at the Emanuel Baptist Church in Falmouth on the 6th of February at 12.30pm.
